Tomato Plant--San Francisco Fog

(Note the "whiteness in the sky...June Gloom.  That is a thick fog-like marine layer in the sky.)
This tomato plant, San Francisco Fog, is growing robustly.  I selected this variety because it is perfect for cool, foggy climates like those found in San Francisco.  With June gloom (which is often preceded by May gray) bringing a month to six weeks of heavy marine layer in the morning and often in the afternoon, I thought this plant would weather well through those periods when other tomato plants would be wondering where the sun was.  Planted early in the growing season, it has set an abundance of small tomatoes which are now starting to ripen.

I have crafted a tomato cage stack on top of a tomato cage to contain it.  Two bamboo poles help secure the "tower."

Breaking News from My California Garden--Tomato Sighting

April 19 at 7 p.m. PDT, in the California garden in zone 23, there has been a sighting of two (!) developing tomatoes.  These heirloom tomatoes are called San Francisco Fog.  They like cool nights and warm days like those found in coastal areas.  The weather has been ideal for them this spring and their ability to set fruit in this climate hasn't disappointed.  The round, red fruit doesn't get too large (two to three inches) but grows in clusters. ( Looks like I have a cluster of one in each location!)
