Nibblers Beware

Five coprosma shrubs were planted in the garden and in just that many days, rabbits had defoliated them to the stems. What to do? Tomato cages were sitting in the garden unemployed. I placed them upside down over the plants and draped them with plastic netting. Now five weeks later, they are back with folliage. I will wait until they are more established to remove the protection.

Hey, I think I'm in Zone 23 also! I don't have any rabbits though - only garden urchins.

Hello Zone Neighbor!

Be glad. I didn't have so many rabbits until about a year ago. Urchins are much preferred.

I seem to be spending more time on critter control than gardening these days. At the Water Conservation Garden (thegarden.org) where I volunteer in the veggie garden, we've been losing to bunnies and squirrels for about 2 years - ever since wildfires in the neighboring back country destroyed habitat and the critters re-located to our garden. Good luck!
