Artichokes: More Than You'll Ever Need

Artichokes--the curious plant.  In this photo you can see the places I have harvested artichoke buds by the brownish color left behind.  Here are two new buds growing very close to where I cut one out on Sunday.  It is like the Disney film, Sorcerer's Apprentice.  Everytime you harvest one, two grow in its place.  Soon I will be overrun with artichokes.  Not that I am complaining.

I love your photos! The artichoke is a most curious plant isn't it - though you give it quite spooky qualities in your story. We inherited artichokes when we bought our first house from an Italian couple and I accidentally let some go to seed and they grow the most amazing purple, thistle like flower, which I dried and stored in a dried flower display. Not that I'm recommending you let productive food plants go to waste - just saying - pretty flower as well.

Wow, so cool. I'm also Zone 23 and looking forward to growing some chokes. How late do you think they can be planted?

I usually plant the artichoke in the fall and then harvest in spring to early summer. Here is a link to a video that Pat Welsh has produced on artichokes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNtP8HTUNfQ

Enjoy!
